Tortoiseshell and calico describe a coloring
found in cats caused by a combination of specific genetic traits. In female
cats, where this trait primarily occurs, it is a result of X-inactivation,
in which different patches of fur receive coding fo
different hair color due to the activation of an X chromosome
from either the mother or the father. Calico coloring is a
mix of phaeomelanin based colors (red) and eumelanin based color
(black, chocolate and cinnamon). Cats of this
coloration are believed to bring good luck in the folklore of
many cultures.

The critical response was mixed, with Monet and C?zanne receiving the harshest attacks. Critic and humorist Louis Leroy wrote a scathing review in the newspaper Le Charivari in which, making wordplay with the title of Claude Monet's Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant), he gave the artists the name by which they would become known. Derisively titling his article The Exhibition of the Impressionists, Leroy declared that Monet's painting was at most, a sketch, and could hardly be termed a finished work. Avon-by-the-Sea is a Victorian community
on the Atlantic Ocean, about 60 miles from
New York and Philadelphia. Besides the Atlantic, the town is
also bound by the
Shark River Inlet and Sylvan Lake. It is a pretty little town
in Monmouth County, NJ with
white sandy beaches plus several restaurants and shops. The Jewel Tower can be found on Abingdon
Street, opposite the Southern side
of the Houses of Parliament. It is the only surviving part of
the Medieval Palace of
Westminster which was burnt to the ground in 1834. The building
was built to an
"L" shaped design as to not interfere with the garden of Edward III.
A moat was dug
around the tower on two sides. The tower was built to house the
Kings Wardrobe-
a collection of jewels and decorative items.

He wrote, in the form of a dialog between viewers, Impression?I was certain of it. I was just telling myself that, since I was impressed, there had to be some impression in it ... and what freedom, what ease of workmanship! Wallpaper in its embryonic state is more finished than that seascape. Claude Monet, Haystacks, (sunset), 1890?1891, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston The term "Impressionists" quickly gained favour with the public. It was also accepted by the artists themselves, even though they were a diverse group in style and temperament, unified primarily by their spirit of independence and rebellion. They exhibited together?albeit with shifting membership?eight times between 1874 and 1886. Painting Galleries << Previous
