Palmetto and Gas Light Lamps on the Walls. Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston has been the scene of numerous and varied historic "firsts." The first decisive American victory during the Revolution occurred at the Battle of Fort Sullivan. The first regularly scheduled passenger train service in America was established here in 1830. The initial shots of the Civil War were fired on Union troops stationed at Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Charleston is equally acclaimed for its contributions to the arts and humanities, and is often viewed as a "living museum." Its singular appeal has been recognized by readers of CondÈ Nast Traveler, who have named the city a "Top 10" domestic destination for nine consecutive years, and by Marjabelle Young Stewart, who named Charleston the "most mannerly" city in America. — Charleston Area Convention & Visitors Bureau

It stands 40 metres[1] above the Forum Romanum, looking down upon it on one side, and upon the Circus Maximus on the other. It is the etymological origin of the word "palace" and its cognates in other languages (Italian "Palazzo", French "Palais" etc).

On a Beautiful Blue-Sky Day, the Light Forms a Rainbow in a Fountain. Mud Island, Memphis, Tennessee

Mud Island is not actually an island but a small peninsula, surrounded by the Mississippi River to the west and the Wolf River Harbor to the east. In 1960, the Wolf River was diverted so that it flows into the Mississippi River north of Mud Island, and Mud Island opened to the public in 1982. It is located within the Memphis city limits, 1.2 miles from the coast of downtown, and houses a museum, restaurants, and an amphitheater. It is accessible by monorail, by foot (via a bridge located on top of the monorail), by ferry, or automobile.
