Roses, Kew Royal Botanical Gardens, London
Kew’s collections have grown for
over two centuries into a uniquely
wide-ranging and well-structured resource, and every day visitors
arrive
at Kew from around the world to work on them. For those unable
to visit Kew,
we want to provide access via the web – and in 2004/05 we made great
progress.
In particular, we are working closely with the Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation
on the African Plants Initiative (API). The Mellon Foundation
provided $1.16 million of support
to Kew during the year and millions more to 25 API partners in
Africa and elsewhere.
We are contributing high resolution images of about 50,000 key
African specimens – more
than any other herbarium worldwide - and this year alone we scanned
and databased more than
20,000 specimens and 2,000 illustrations. These resources are
fundamental to the understanding
of African plant diversity. Web access will dramatically increase
Africa’s own capability to identify and
research plants – vital for conservation and sustainable development.
